Sorta? I’ve just been too into mah viddyagames to even care about writing. This season has easily been the best gaming season I’ve ever been apart of, which in turn makes it the most expensive for me. I’d love to review the games I’ve played in depth, but I’ll keep it short and not as dorky as I could have been.
Super Mario Galaxy (A+) I’m nine stars in. I don’t care. This is the best game I’ve played in nearly a decade. The controls are Mario-tight, the platforming is insane, and the soundtrack is the best I’ve heard. The Wii isn’t a graphics powerhouse by any stretch, but I think it’s what you do with the hardware that makes a game beautiful. Nintendo pushed the limits, and the results are great. Mario in a bee costume is too cute. I think the only qualm I have with maybe an hour or two in is that Nintendo seriously needs to reevaluate how they construct boss battles. It’s either you’re hitting a projectile back at a boss, or finding the weak spot of the boss and exploiting it three times. I could be proven wrong as I go through Galaxy, but it’s been like this for a decade.
Call of Duty 4 (A) This game arrived at such an inopportune time for me personally. If it were released at any other point during the year, it would have easily been my go to game. Yes, the game can be completed in six hours, so length may be a drawback for some. I could care less. I could beat Contra in 10 minutes and that’s one of my favorite games of all time. I’ve also played 25 hour crapfests, so I think the emphasis on length in a game is one of the most overrated aspects of judging how good a game is. Coming off that tangent, the multi-player portion of COD4 was a huge surprise for me. I love that you get EXP for things like assists, and other sorts of mini-quests like getting 30 assists or a certain amount of kills or headshots. In turn, that EXP can go towards getting weapons upgrades and other stuff. That feature right there pushes me to play the game.
I didn’t even talk about the gameplay yet! Tactical, brutal…a poo in your shorts good time.
Halo 3 (B-) My disappointment of the year, and that doesn’t really discredit how good the game is. I thought that the story mode was……..very good. The multi-player is also very good but it seems like the same multi-player I’ve been playing for nearly four years. I don’t think the items feature adds a whole lot, and the maps that are out currently are uninspiring. I won’t say that I didn’t have my fun with it, because for two weeks I had an absolute blast. As of now however, it hasn’t touched my disc tray in weeks.
Guitar Hero 3 (B) I have an affinity for fake instruments. I also break them when I get mad. I think this is my fourth guitar thanks to Wal-Mart’s lax return policy, so I can’t complain. I even have one in deadstock condition in case any flashes of blinding rage malfunctions happen with the guitar. I think this is the last Guitar Hero I’m going to buy, just because of how brilliant Rock Band looks. I’m also not a huge fan of Activision’s price gouging on downloadable content. $6.25 for 3 songs? I gave in for Foo Fighters, but they’re the Foo Fighters. I’d probably pay $20 for a playable version of Everlong. THE BIGGEST THING I’M NOT A FAN OF IS NEVERSOFT FUCKING UP GUITAR HERO WITH THEIR STUPID BOSS BATTLES. WHAT THE FUCK GUYS. I GO THROUGH PLAYING A RHYTHM BASED GAME, AND IN THE END YOU TOSS ME A MINI-GAME THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH WHAT I’VE BEEN DOING FOR THE PAST 3 HOURS? THAT’S LIKE BUYING STREET FIGHTER AND AT THE END, M. BISON TURNS INTO A MOTHERFUCKING CAR AND I HAVE TO RACE IT AROUND A TRACK. ASSHOLES.
I’ll probably review more games later.
